What is price sensitivity analysis?
Price sensitivity analysis is the process of measuring how changes in price affect a shopper’s likelihood to buy. It helps retailers understand how much demand will shift when a product’s price goes up or down, and by how much.
Why price sensitivity analysis matters
Product reactions to price changes vary; grocery staples may see little sales movement, while optional items spike. Without analysis, retailers guess when setting prices and promotions.
Price sensitivity analysis eliminates this guesswork. Retailers use it to:

How price sensitivity analysis works

- Visibility: frequent promotions train shoppers to wait for deals, increasing sensitivity
The calculation
Price Elasticity = % Change in Demand ÷ % Change in Price
A -1.5 result means a 1% price increase drops demand by 1.5%. Scores between 0 and -1 indicate low sensitivity (stable demand), while scores below -1 show high sensitivity (strong shopper reactions).
For promotions:
Expected Lift % = Price Elasticity × Discount %
This estimates expected promotional volume before running the discount.
Practical example
A retailer evaluates a 20% discount on a national brand (elasticity -0.8) and a private label alternative (elasticity -2.1), both priced at $5.00.
- National brand expected lift: 16% volume increase
- Private label expected lift: 42% volume increase
The private label is highly price-sensitive and interchangeable, so a price drop drives substantial demand. Conversely, the national brand has a loyal base that buys it regardless, making a promotion mostly a margin giveaway.
Consequently, the retailer applies the deeper promotion to the private label to capture incremental volume while keeping a shallower discount on the national brand to protect profit margins.
